Dean's Message

Welcome to the Sushant School of Design.

This is a very exciting time to be a part of the design fraternity, as there is convergence of many circumstances that make design a very desirable profession in India today.

Firstly, India is a growing economy with a young population and an increasing consumer base, leading to the need for better products and services that are customized to suit the needs of people not just in India, but all over the world. The focus on Make in India empowers designers to think creatively about design solutions, by integrating our rich craft traditions with contemporary and future trends in technology.

Secondly, there is a growing awareness about the importance of design thinking as a technique that permeates all facets of life and not just in developing artefacts. There are a growing number of designers in think tanks and strategic planning forums all over the world and certainly in India as well. There are many initiatives today that are facilitated by designers due to their multi-faceted approach to problem solving.

Thirdly, India is a country where rapid urbanization has led to the need for very creative solutions for space and resource utilization, scale and sustainability and social issues of equity, opportunity, awareness building, disease control, to name a few. This is a fertile ground for the abilities of an agile, aware, solution-focused designer who can work with communities to address issues effectively.

Traditionally, design education focused on developing skills – visual, making, thinking and technical skills. Today, with an upsurge of technology and a greater awareness of the potential of a designer, design education encompasses so much more – empathy, agility across technological processes, engagement with wicked problems, greater awareness of industry trends, research practices; the list is long.
